OVERVIEW
iPad application for Scion dealership sales staff to configure vehicles, explore accessories, and calculate financing in real-time on the showroom floor. Designed to replace paper catalogs and desktop-only systems with a unified mobile experience.
THE CHALLENGE
Sales representatives needed to move freely around the showroom while accessing vehicle options, pricing, protection plans, trade-in valuations, and financing calculators—but this information was scattered across printed materials, desktop computers, and separate systems. The challenge was creating an intuitive iPad interface that handled complex real-time calculations while working within 2012 hardware constraints.

DESIGN SOLUTIONS
Visual Vehicle Selection
Color-coded cards with hero imagery for each Scion model (tC, xB, xD, iQ, FR-S) provided instant recognition and reinforced the brand's young, bold identity.
Four-Tab Configuration Flow
• Accessories: Grid-based browsing with category filters (Wheels, Sound & AV, Exterior, Interior, Performance)
• Protection Plans: Video explanations for complex warranties with drag-and-drop activation
• Trade-In: Integrated multiple valuation sources (KBB, Edmunds, NADA) for transparency
• Financing: Real-time Finance/Lease calculators with prominent monthly payment display
Persistent sidebar showed running total, transmission selection, and collapsible lists of added items—ensuring price transparency throughout the experience.
Key Design Decisions
• Scion's chartreuse yellow for all interactive elements (brand consistency + clear affordance)
• Large product imagery over text-heavy lists (visual discovery with customers)
• Video integration for protection plans (helping staff articulate value)
• Drag-and-drop interactions (natural tactile iPad affordance)
• Modals for disclaimers/details (preventing accidental navigation)
• Offline caching for core catalog (spotty showroom WiFi)
CONSTRAINTS & TRADEOFFS
• iPad hardware required careful image optimization and limited animations
• Designed to export to existing dealer systems rather than replacing them entirely
• Internet connectivity required for real-time trade-in/financing calculations
OUTCOMES
Project designed but implementation status unknown (left employer before deployment). What the design aimed to solve: • Replace multiple disconnected systems with single unified tool • Enable visual product exploration vs. reading from catalogs • Build customer trust through price transparency and real-time calculations
KEY TAKEAWAY
Designing B2B sales tools requires balancing multiple audiences—sales staff efficiency, customer engagement, and dealer business needs. The best enterprise tools reimagine workflows around the medium's unique affordances rather than just digitizing existing processes.
